Description
Summary:The present article offers a descriptive catalogue of bilingual vocabularies of Spanish and indigenous languages of America compiled by missionaries lexicographers throughout the 16th century. The vocabularies composed in this period and their main features are analyzed in chronological order, paying special attention to the influence of the Vocabulario español-latino (ca.1495) by Antonio de Nebrija. Finally, it is also shown that most of the vocabularies record neologisms, which are of interest for the historical study of Spanish lexicon in America.
