Summary:In the recent decade, thanks to rapid development of new immunologic, morphologic and biologic methods we have achieved dramatic progress in understanding of celiac disease aetiopathogenesis. The whole image of the disease has been changed and enlarged — now it’s defined as an immunemediated multisystemic disease, that is caused by gluten and corresponding prolamines among genetically vulnerable individuals, that is characterized by a variety of gluten-dependant clinical features, specific antibodies, HLA DQ2 and DQ8 haplotypes and enteropathy.
