Summary: | This article aims to highlight the role of Siamese conservatives in overthrowing the elected government of the Rear Admiral Thamrongnawasawat. The 1947 coup d’État, organized jointly by some military factions and royalists of the Democrat Party, reflected the increased activity of the latter. It was an opportunity for them to remove the democratic institutions built by the former head of the anti-Japanese resistance Pridi Banomyong. Taking advantage of the discontent of the military after the war, and their impunity, Siamese conservatives engaged in the first attempt to restore royal authority before being ousted by Marshal Phibun Songkhram after only few months. |
