| Summary: | Abstract Introduction The Department of Anesthesiology of the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center has adopted an airway management protocol that is taught to all anesthesia residents. All residents are expected to demonstrate competence for fiberoptic intubation, intubation using an intubating laryngeal mask, and cricothyroidotomy. Methods The three procedures are set up at airway management motor skills objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) stations. At each station a junior resident scores the performance using the specific OSCE checklist, which provides an additional educational experience for the junior. The assessment sessions are digitally videotaped and the records of successful residents become part of the resident's portfolio. Since faculty time is a very scarce resource we have designed the assessment procedure to require minimal faculty input. Only one faculty member is present in the simulation lab to ensure adherence to the protocol. Results The significance of this activity is that many residents could be assessed in a short period using only one faculty member. Discussion Our intention is that another institution can perform a similar assessment without any developmental difficulties. |
