description Background: breastfeeding is a natural biological process in women during pregnancy and its purpose is to feed and protect the newborn baby up to six months of age.
Objective: to identify the information that adolescent mothers of infants have about breastfeeding.
Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. The study population consisted of 68 mothers of infants, belonging to the Type B Health Center of Santa Rosa, Riobamba in Ecuador in the period from November 2021 to April 2022. The sample was selected non-randomly and was made up of 24 adolescent mothers of infants. The variables that were established for the analysis were: age, level of education, pregnancy planning, family support or sentimental partner, type of infant feeding, period of exclusive breastfeeding provided to the infant and information received on the adequate feeding of the infant. Lactating. The data was shown using the different ways of presenting the information provided by descriptive statistics: statistical tables and graphs, in which the summarized data is presented through absolute and relative frequencies.
Results: 34 % of the mothers of infants correspond to adolescents. The third level and secondary school predominated as the completed levels of instruction. More than 50 % stated that they had planned the pregnancy and had family support. Exclusive breastfeeding prevailed as the type of feeding and more than half of the infants benefited from exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months of life. 77.5 % acknowledged having received information on the importance of breastfeeding in infant feeding.
Conclusions: health promotion on issues such as adolescent pregnancy and breastfeeding is vital and necessary.
