description Introduction: independent study is an essential element in the Teaching Learning Process in today's Cuban universities, approachable from different perspectives, contributes to a correct orientation and preparation for the professional life of future university graduates. Objective: disseminate the conceptions that Cuban university teachers have in relation to independent study, specifically their planning, orientation, evaluation, improvement and innovation. Method: the analysis was based on the application of a survey for the collection of information to 85 teachers from five careers, two from the University of Medical Sciences and three from the University of Pinar del Río, the data collected were analyzed A non-parametric (Kruskal Wallis) analysis was carried out to analyze if there were significant differences between the participants considering the career in which they work and the years of experience Results: the teachers surveyed expressed, very important, the questions that were asked in the survey, and that they are updated, with the trends observed in the current Cuban university, regarding the independent study of students. The highest scores are given to key elements such as the planning and orientation of the independent study. There are significant differences between the career where they work and the years of experience of teachers. Conclusion: the success is that university teachers, to a large extent, pay special attention to the intimate relationship between planning, orientation, implementation, control, improvement and innovation of independent study.
