description The importance of the research. An increase number of people with dentition defects has been observed during last years. If dentoalveolar deformations are not timely substituted by dentures, they will be complicated by dentoalveolar deformations, violation of occlusal ratio and other pathologies. Temporomandibular joints are involved in the pathological process at untimely replacement of dentition defects. Morphological disorders are accompanied by functional violations of biodynamic balance of masticatory muscles, often in the stage of decompensation. Purpose of the study is to study functional state of the masticatory muscles in patients with dentition defects, which are complicated by dentoalveolar deformations in comparison with the norm. Materials and methods. There were 99 patients aged from 18 to 59 years with dentition abnormalities, including control group of patients of the same age period, with intact dental arches, using special techniques. The functional status of the masticatory muscles has been defined in all patients by electromyography function, which registers the bioelectric potentials of muscles in order to eliminate dentoalveolar abnormalities and restore the integrity of the dentition. Electromyographic studies have been performed using computer neuro-electromyograph M-Test which is produced by «Dh-system» association (Kharkiv) which is developed by the staff of the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry of P. L. Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education. When quantitative electromyogram was processed, the following parameters had been taken into account: the amplitude of compression and mastication (measured in mV), time activity (ms.), the duration of the rest phase (msec.) The particular significance in the this analysis was provided to ratio of these parameters which are indicated in the literature as “K” factor. Results of the study. The electromyographic study of masticatory muscles allowed obtaining functional state of neuromuscular apparatus of dental system of patients with dentition defects, who had complicated dentoalveolar deformations. In particular, prolongation of chewing time, change of chewing rhythm and reduction of chewing efficiency are observed in patients with dentition defects, which are complicated by dentoalveolar deformations compared with the norm. Especially, noticeable changes occur within a single dynamic loop (activity rest) in time figures of bioelectrical activity and the ratio between the excitatory and inhibitory processes are rapidly deteriorating, increase the term of bioelectric activity by reducing the period of relative rest bioelectrical. The jaw muscles on both sides generally operate inefficiently, which ultimately can lead to the progression of morphological abnormalities. Values of “K” coefficient is significantly higher than in the control group, which indicates a significant negative trend of functional bioelectric activity 1,72 ± 0,03 and 1,79 ± 0,04 for right and left masseter muscles, respectively, versus 1,04 ± 0,04 and 1,05 ± 0,04 respectively for the right and left of the chewing muscles in the control group.
