| description | This paper tries to account for the views on modern science by some Egyptian scientific leaders in a period when knowledge coming from Europe had already held a role for several decades in relation to the organization of the state. The time period studied in the paper predates the British occupation which brutally interrupted the ongoing process, namely, the taking in charge by the Egyptian themselves of their scientific fate. Texts emanating from the various movements which popularized science among the population, in particular, the writings of the astronomer Ismâ'îl Mustafâ, allow the researcher to understand, in relation to the scientific milieu of the time, the strong will to inscribe scientific development in a historical continuity rather than as something perceived as fundamentally foreign. Science then would be considered among the permanent values of the Islamic civilization. |
