A new synonym for Coprophilus (Zonyptilus) solskyi Bernhauer, 1908 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Oxytelinae)

| description | Long time Coprophilus (Zonyptilus) solskyi
Bernhauer, 1908 (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) was known
only from Romania. This species reliably occurs in the
south of the European part of Russia and we assume that it has much wider distribution. Reitter identified this species as Coprophilus lateralis Fauvel, 1875 (Zonoptilus lateralis in the original paper) using a material from Dobruja. Later, Bernhauer described the new species C. solskyi on the basis of the same material. Tóth studied a type specimen of C. solskyi, indicated it as holotype and redescribed the species, comparing it with C. pentatoma Fauvel, 1897 and C. drugmandi Tóth, 1991. The most important moment in the work of Tóth is a description of clypeus (matt in C. solskyi and C. drugmandi, and shiny in C. pentatoma).
Reitter and Bernhauer didn’t mention a number of
specimens of C. solskyi and indication of the holotype is
incorrect in the work of Tóth. As a result the lectotype of
Coprophilus (Zonyptilus) solskyi is designated here. Tóth
distinguished C. fauveli Tóth, 1992 from C. solskyi by the
structure of male genitalia, brown spot in scutellum area
and shiny clypeus (as in C. pentatoma), and only by the
shiny clypeus from C. drugmani. Study of type specimens
and additional material of C. pentatoma, C. solskyi and
C. fauveli showed that clypeus of all three species is shiny, not shagreen or matt. The holotype of C. fauveli has not distinct brown spot, only dark area as in C. solskyi. The structure of aedeagus is absolutely identical in C. solskyi and C. fauveli. Thus, both taxa are conspecific and the following new synonymy is established: Coprophilus (Zonyptilus) solskyi Bernhauer, 1908 = Coprophilus (Zonyptilus) fauveli Tóth, 1992, syn. n. |
