Summary: | Recent work on the identification and control of steelworks blast furnaces is reviewed. The difficulties in obtaining experimental models are described; these include unmeasured variables, uneven cast interval, the very slow dynamics and the frequently non-stationary behaviour of the furnace. Factors influencing the form of the model are discussed. It is concluded that empirical models will prove useful in tracking short-term variations in furnace behaviour. |
