Description
Summary:Since March 2018, a parliamentary mission focusing on the herbalist’s profession has revived the opposition between pharmacists and herbalists. This article puts this issue into historical perspective, analyzing the relationship between herbalists and pharmacists during the nineteenth century. At that time, the profession was legally recognized through a state diploma. The available archives show that the relationships between herbalists and pharmacists varied according to the backgrounds (family, legal framework, economic context, etc.): the bonds connecting these two worlds were very complicated. Thus, herbalists have constantly negotiated their proximity to the pharmacy, drawing inspiration from this model while seeking to distance themselves from it, in order to legitimize their own existence.
