description | It is generally understood that Calderón was rarely able to control the publication of his dramatic works, and he complained about the fact on a neumber of occasions. The most read writer of the Golden Age was not particularly happy with the diffusion of his dramatic works via the printing press, since this method did not permit the reader the possibility of grasping all the performative potential of a given play, though it offers the opportunity for the appraisal of calderón’s rewriting. We must recall that they were after all written precisely for theatrical production. He had however little choice but to accept a situation in which his influence was negligible. The playwright’s various intents at control through the divulgation of lists of plays has been to this day a determining factor in the establishment of the Calderonian corpus. Nevertheless, the lists bring to light errors, omissions and questionable rejections, that respond to a purpose that is not altogether clear. Some of the problems evoked could be due to forgetfulness, or to voluntary omissions perhaps because of a lack of interest for certain past works, or because of a change of attitude towards the contents of others, or because of the bad state of conservation of certain texts. The errors in the works published by Vera Tassis, Calderón’s first bibliographer, are less surprising taking into account that they are the result of his having worked alone. |
