| Summary: | The preference of Romanians in Bukovina for history and language is a reflection of their national militancy, which characterized the end of the XIXth century. Subjected to a foreign government, that changed structures and mentalities, the Romanians have found in language and history some useful arguments for preserving their national values and recovering their collective dignity. Many scholars were involved in the forging of Romanian consciousness. The following study highlights aspects of biographical and historiographycal activity of Ion Nistor. It also presents the historian’s contribution to the development of Romanian historiography in Bukovina, in two critical periods: the period before the World War I, when the national movement had been resized, depending on historical needs, and the period during 1914-1918, focusing on unification of Bukovina with the Romanian Kingdom, including the consequence of the next events in December 1918. Although there are some details about the historian’s life, this study is emphasized in the role of Nistor to the professionalization of the Romanian historiography, which was specific to the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century.
