description Among the translators of 16th century Spain, we must include physicians, professionals with advanced training who engage in the translation of scientific texts, particularly medical ones, from Greek into Latin or from Latin and Greek into Spanish. They also translate works of Latin and Greek literature into vernacular languages. One of these literary translations is that of Plautus’ Amphitruo. The early version by the physician Francisco López de Villalobos, intended for reading in an academic setting, has a clear recipient in the performable version by Juan de Timoneda, which owes some of its peculiarities precisely to Villalobos» work.
