Summary: | Based on observations gained while preparing for the performance of the Concerto for Viola and Orchestra by Antônio Borges-Cunha (2007) the aim is to investigate how the composer explored the sonorous possibilities of the solo viola in this work by questioning the relationship between the composer’s stylistic attributes and the fundamentals of instrumental technique. In order to enhance the means of discussing the topic, concepts like “tradition”– as it relates to the viola specifically – and “timbre” are also analyzed. In conclusion, there is a predominance of writing that provokes an atmosphere associated to the idea of tradition and that, even in passages where the prevailing sonority moves away from this notion, instrumental technique stays within tradition. |
