description Few researchers have been interested in the collection of these small pieces that folklorists have called « popular blazon ». One of the only works on the subject was published by Paul Sébillot (1843-1918) and Henri Gaidoz (1842-1932). Here is how they defined them: « Under the name of popular blazon, one designates the whole of the qualifiers that the inhabitants of a country, of a province, sometimes of a commune, address to their neighbors. Some of them are the simple statement, without epigram, of a real or supposed quality; others allude to a local fact - or supposed to be such - generally comical. Most of them are satirical and contain hurtful allusions, like those that Homer's heroes used to send back to each other before the battle ». How can we explain the birth of these popular blazon? What are their different forms? To which persons of the society did they attack? What were their shortcomings? These are the questions that this article tries to answer.
