common characteristics of Portuguese guilds, it is possible to verify their strong presence and
considerable political influence in Brazil through the first half of the nineteenth century. The
article emphasizes the fundamental role performed by these craft brotherhoods, both in the
Portuguese guilds and in their colonial offshoots, standing out as important institutions in the
consolidation of relations between masters and apprentices, and strong channels of interaction
with the political life of city |
