description The article presents an overview of the craft guilds in colonial Brazil, showing how they proliferated in various regions by introducing organizational structures that had a deep relationship to the realities of colonial life, with an emphasis on social and economic reality of Rio de Janeiro. Analyzing the prominence of Casa dos vinte e quatro in Lisboan and certain common characteristics of Portuguese guilds, it is possible to verify their strong presence and considerable political influence in Brazil through the first half of the nineteenth century. The article emphasizes the fundamental role performed by these craft brotherhoods, both in the Portuguese guilds and in their colonial offshoots, standing out as important institutions in the consolidation of relations between masters and apprentices, and strong channels of interaction with the political life of city
