description | The idea that time progresses in a narrative line is one of the fundamental characteristics of narrative. Among the theorists who study narrative in terms of time elements, Genette underscores the significance of time. Based on concepts of order, duration, and frequency, this study examines the novel The Zero Degree Orbit by Ahmad-Mahmoud to gain a deeper understanding of time structure and its importance in fictional narratives. Based on the components of the Genette’s narrative model, this research employs an analytical-inferential method. Aside from a descriptive analysis of time in The Zero Degree Orbit, which is told from the perspective of a limited omniscient, the paper concludes that anachronisms are evident in the first four chapters of the novel. In this novel, there are a number of anachronisms, such as analepsis and prolepsis, each of which serves a specific purpose. Depending on the acceleration criteria, the story may demonstrate a fast or slow rhythm in some cases. A large part of the text is composed of dialogues, and many calendar events and dramatic scenes have been omitted in order to maintain a focus on the most important events. In this novel, various frequencies also play a role. |
