description |
Background: studies of the group 10/66 report a high prevalence of dementia in Cuba, pointing it out as the main cause of disability and dependence in the elderly, with costs that will increase in the next 30 years.

Objective: to describe the behavior of dementia in the elderly with severe disability in a health area of San Miguel del Padrón municipality, Havana.

Methods: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in the area of California Teaching Polyclinic during 2013. The universe was made up of 1259 adults of 60 years and older diagnosed as severely disabled with health histories fulfilling the necessary parameters of quality. To determine the disability degree, the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule II (WHODAS-II), the approaches of the DSM-IV to diagnose dementia, the Ischemic Scale of Hachinski for the etiologic classification, and the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) for staging were used.

Results: the average age of the whole series was 85 years old, with prevalence of females. The most frequent health problems were the double incontinence pressure sores. More than half of the disabled suffered from dementia and in more than a third it was the primary cause of disability. Alzheimer's disease was the most frequent dementia.

Conclusion: behavior of dementia in the severely disabled elderly included in the study was described.
|
