description The research program "Air pollution caused by motor-traffic in urban spaces" (abbreviated by IMKRAL) has been performed in Munich from spring 1989 until spring 1993. Some results will be discussed here. Air pollutants measured in several street-canyons of different geometry were standardized in order to be compared to each other. Street-width, wind speed above roof level and amount of emission are the basis for the standardization. High values of standardized concentrations of NOx and CO were found in those street-canyons where building-height is greater than street-width. For the analysis of air pollution in different urban structures, results of some car-traverses for air pollutants on the same route are discussed. The route leads from the University in the northern centre of Munich through the "Englischer Garten", which is a popular recreation park in the northern part of Munich, and through a vehicular tunnel with intensive motor-traffic back to the starting point. The results show a great spatial variability of air pollutants. In the "Englischer Garten" the ozone mixing ratios happened to be higher than in the surrounding urban area with high traffic-density. Extreme high mixing ratios were found inside the vehicular tunnel for all air pollutants measured except for ozone. Because of these high concentrations of air pollutants that were found inside the tunnel, a special investigation was carried out in order to analyse air pollution inside and outside of 5 vehicular tunnels in detail. In those tunnels different patterns of air pollutants were detected, depending on the ventilating-system, the tunnel-length and whether the traffic-lanes for each direction are located together in the tunnel or separated by a wall.
