Summary:The paper deals with the problem of representation of the archetypal component in the concept of ISLANDNESS. A definitional analysis of the lexemes “insularity” and “island” made it possible to pick out such semes as “water”, “land”, “surroundedness” which are viewed in terms of archetypes verbalized in language, myths, and works of art. Examples from English fiction are studied through a conceptual-semantic analysis.
