Summary:For environmental meteorological studies it is often crucial to have access to a weather pattern classification scheme, which also includes information about the source area and the path of an air parcel. Besides the fact that most weather pattern classifications lack objectivity, only a few are applicable to environmental questions. Thus a new approach was persued in this work to obtain the desired information. Isobaric backward trajectories, calculated twice daily over a period of three and a half years ending in the Eastern Alps were sorted into nine typical clusters by a clustering technique described in Dorling at al. (1992). Relating the classification with selected meteorological and chemical parameters of the atmosphere measured at various Austrian sites the method was found to yield meaningful results.
