Summary: | After 1990, in Romania, following the privatization of most tourist accommodation units,
investments were directed towards modernizing and raising the comfort level of tourist
accommodation units and new units were built.
In this paper, we have analyzed the evolution of Romania's tourist accommodation capacity in
recent years, especially regarding the coastal area. The analysis can be useful in making future
investment decisions in new units.
Even though, compared to the EU-27 countries’ average, in Romania the increase in the number
of bed - places has been superior in the last decade, nevertheless we consider that there is still a
need for investment in new units of superior comfort and for further modernization of the older units.
The main issues faced by tourism in Romania are not about the existing accommodation capacity,
but rather with the low occupancy rate, the short average length of stay and the small number of
foreign tourists.
