Description
Summary:Abstract: From 1864 to 1870, the Breton La Villemarqué (1815–1895) accompanied his sick wife, first in the summer at Eaux-Bonnes (1863–1865), then in the winter at Pau (1866–1870). If the stays in Eaux-Bonnes bored him somewhat, he found in Pau a social and cultural life that suited him better and in which he was involved on occasion, at a time when his Barzaz-Breiz, a work of popular songs published in 1839, was the subject of a virulent controversy as to the authenticity of its content. It was from Pau that he had to respond to the criticisms levelled at him. There he received valuable support, including that of Puymaigre (1816–1901) from Lorraine. Their common interest in popular poetry led them to exchange on their respective experiences and even to collect songs from the Ossau valley.
