description The struggle against the idols has concealed an important element of Calvin’s theology : it is open to aesthetics, when the picture passes of the status of liturgical object in that of work of art. His view of God continually refers to beauty and art, for which he makes use of metaphors. His aesthetics comes to light in his theology of creation and of the sacraments. It is sustained by a differentiated theory of signs, i.e. both linguistic and plastic elements. For that reason, it seems really modern.
