description “Naive reading”, or “commonplace”, reading for entertainment, with empathy, where the reader is emotionally invested in the text, identifies with the characters, passes judgment on them; this type of reading is often considered, in literary study, as illegitimate and inauthentic: indeed, it is commonplace to oppose it to “true” reading, or “knowledgeable reading”, aloof, in which the reader doesn't give in to the “referential fallacy”, but instead considers the text as an effect-producing machine that has no meaning outside of itself. Plato is often credited as the father of this wariness towards the referential fallacy. What we will be showing here is that from the Phaedrus can be drawn a conception of reading which is much closer to that of “naïve” reading, and, therefore, an invitation to read the Dialogues as a “naive reader”, which is also, for Plato, the truly philosophical reader.
