Previous studies have found that DNA methylation plays a crucial regulatory role in the occurrence and progression of atherosclerotic plaques, with a cell-specific pattern in different stages of the progression. This article reviewed the DNA methylation changes in endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, macrophages in atherosclerotic plaques and peripheral blood immune cells in patients with atherosclerotic disease, and summarized DNA methylation changes in patients with atherosclerotic stroke, to provide new ideas for clinical prevention and treatment of CVD and exploring new targets.
