Summary: | Welsh voters elected their Assembly Members sitting in the devolved parliament in May 2016, i.e. just one year after the 2015 general election, and a few weeks before the referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union. It was then necessary for the main parties to mobilise voters and to insist on the specificity of the coming debates, considering the particular context in which the regional elections were held. Indeed, the Welsh Labour Party was in a special position, Wales being the last remaining Labour stronghold in the UK, and Plaid Cymru, the nationalist party, was facing a paradox. Finally, there was a risk that the two campaigns – for the regional elections and for the referendum – became blurred. All Welsh parties decided to focus on change, yet they adopted varied strategies – as indicated by the manifestos they published – and obtained mixed results. |
