description Upon reading La trahison des clercs by Julien Benda, one wonders if law academics can betray their clerical junction, just as the philosophers and writers Benda attacked did. « Les clercs » are not “intellectuals”, and thus being involved in public debates is not a primary function of theirs. For Benda, their life is devoted to speculation and contemplation. Nonetheless, contrary to common beliefs, « les clercs » can be involved in some aspects of political conflicts as long as they concern clerical values they are committed to defend, such as Truth or Justice. Therefore law academics can be assimilated with « les clercs ». Recent polemics brought by the public engagement of some of them, as jurists and in the name of Law, will also be analysed, based on Benda’s writing.
