Summary: | The paper is written on the field ethnographic material, which the author has collected on this topic. Rites, holidays and games of the winter cycle of the mountaineers of Daghestan, as a component of spiritual culture, are of great interest at the present stage. These ceremonies and holidays are part of the calendar and seasonal folk entertainment, which includes the onset of winter; the holidays were accompanied by the preparation and distribution of ritual food, dressing, games, songs, dances, etc. The purpose of this article is to identify and examine (study) the rites and festivals of the mountaineers of the Daghestan winter cycle, in connection with the recently emerging heightened interest in the national origins of modern culture, in particular, in spiritual culture. When writing the article, such scientific methods as analysis and synthesis were used. They allow us to consider the role and place of the rites and holidays of the winter cycle of the mountaineers of Daghestan in ethnoculture. Methods show to us the general and particular development of individual regions of upland Dagestan, which may differ due to different conditions (socio-economic, ethnographic, ecological). Together with general scientific methods, the article used particular research methods, such as identifying a specific, descriptive method, etc. In the article we came to the following results: the rites and holidays of the winter cycle in question are divided into several groups. Group 1 – holidays associated with the beginning of the winter and calendar year; Group 2 – the mid-winter holidays, which contained the idea of awakening nature from winter sleep and preparing it for spring; Group 3 – rituals and entertainment of winter leisure. In conclusion, our study showed that winter was a time of rest after a busy year. In addition to purely calendar holidays (beginning, mid-winter), it was rich in various forms of traditional leisure that created a festive situation.
