description This essay is in response to Éric Dacheux’s essay, “Communication et solidarité démocratique. Repenser la stratégie des initiatives solidaires,” published in the latest issue of Communication. The author drew up a theoretical framework for rethinking solidarity initiatives and proposed ways to combat their public invisibility. We will review and enrich the “solidarity communication” approach he puts forward by drawing on the empirical field of international solidarity associations (ISAs) and John Dewey’s theory of pragmatism. By seeking to build a more just world as associations, ISAs are democratic civil society organizations that strive for solidarity. We therefore need to develop a political approach to international solidarity communication (ISC) that is consistent with the nature of ISAs.
