Summary: | The purpose of this article is to address a part of the history of relations between urbanization and sanitation in the present city of Caxias do Sul, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The Introduction of the article presents some considerations on the historiography of urbanization and on the process of formation of the old Colony of Caxias. Following, the text addresses the municipality's first actions focused on sanitation, highlighting the Code of Postures of 1893 and the Neatness Public service. The final part of the article includes the creation of a water supply system in the city of Caxias do Sul – a system that took shape from the mobilization of society and cooperation between the municipality and the state government.
