Description
Summary:The food industry plays a vital role in human nutrition and health but also presents significant challenges for entrepreneurs due to its highly competitive nature. This thesis aims to provide valuable insights and strategies for new entrants in the food sector by conducting extensive market research to uncover current challenges and future trends, analyzing case studies of both successful and failed food startups using the Entrepreneurial Strategy Framework (Compass & Canvas), and interviewing founders of food companies to gain further insights. The framework is systematically applied to each case study, examining various aspects such as customer identification, technology adoption, competition analysis, organizational structure, value creation and capture hypotheses, and strategic choices, along with the linkages among these elements. By identifying common patterns and deriving insights from these analyses, the thesis offers guidance for food industry startups. The practical application of this research is demonstrated by developing a systematic entrepreneurial strategy using the “Test Two, Choose One” methodology for the author’s Smarnack project, sponsored by the MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund. This example showcases how the framework can be effectively used to guide and advance the progress of a food industry startup. In conclusion, this thesis serves as a comprehensive guide for entrepreneurs seeking to enter and succeed in the competitive food industry. By leveraging market research, case study analysis, and the practical application to the author’s own project, the thesis provides valuable insights and strategies to help new entrants navigate the dynamic and challenging landscape of the food industry.
