Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dept. of Physics. Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dept. of Physics. Physics. Thesis (Sc. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Physics, 2010. In title on title page, "the square root of sigma" appears as the mathematical symbol, and "sigma" appears as the lower-case Greek letter. Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. Includes bibliographical references (p. 217-220). The inclusive jet cross section, the dijet cross section, and the dijet longitudinal double spin asymmetry ALL in polarized proton-proton collisions at [square root of sigma] = 200 GeV are measured with a data sample of 5.4 pbm collected with the STAR detector during RHIC Run-6. The inclusive cross section is measured as a function of jet transverse momentum PT in the range of 10 < PT < 60 GeV in the mid-rapidity region I[eta]I </= 0.8. The results are in agreement with QCD NLO predictions. The dijet cross section and the dijet ALL are measured as a function of dijet mass Mj in the range of 25 < Mjj < 100 GeV. The dijet cross section is in agreement with QCD NLO predictions. The dijet ALL is compared with QCD NLO predictions based on various parametrizations of polarized gluon distributions of the proton. The results are inconsistent with large gluon polarization and expected to lead to a constrain on the polarized gluon distribution. by Tai Sakuma.
