Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2011. Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. Includes bibliographical references (p. 95-97). I report on the design and construction of an apparatus for frequency resolved optical gating of attosecond pulses. Frequency resolved optical gating is the state-of-the-art technique for measuring the temporal profile of attosecond optical pulses. In this thesis, I discuss the operation of the apparatus in the context of the theoretical background, numerical algorithms, and engineering design features of the experimental system. This thesis contains detailed explanations of the various design goals and decisions that are necessary to understand in order to successfully operate the system. by Alexander Visotsky Soane.
