Summary: | Both the field and laboratory tests provide the basic information on the permeability and compressibility characteristics of soft clay. These basic information are applied for the estimation of the magnitude and rate of consolidation settlements resulting from the change of effective stresses. In spite of all the improvements to determine the parameters for consolidation settlements, current methods of predicting the consolidation behaviour for the soft clay has remained more an art than a routine procedure. To-date, it may be possible to predict the magnitude of settlement within 10 to 20% accuracy, but the capacity of predicting time-settlement relationships has remained rather poor. |
