description This report presents the past, existing and potential competitive or complementary relationship between air and sea freight services in Singapore’s context. The first part of the report looks at the past air and sea freight transport development in Singapore, and thereafter analyses their relationship. Following which are the present freight developments in Singapore, and the trends in air and sea freight services. Evaluation of the factors leading to the competitive relationship is carried out using Michael Porter’s Five Forces Model, while the analysis of the competition is done using Just-In-Time (JIT) concept and perishable cargoes. The complementary relationship of air and sea freight transport is discussed using the sea-air freight mode as well as by looking at JIT concept from an alternative perspective. In the last section, the report touches on the future outlook on the size of aircrafts and containerships, new technology, fuel prices, and the future economic development which will affect the future relationship of both the freight transport modes in Singapore.
