description Nowadays, myopic becomes a pervasive phenomenon when more and more teenagers put on glasses. “Today, nearly 40 percent of the U.S. population has myopia, or nearsightedness, and it's only expected to grow. By 2050, 50 percent of the world's population, a total of nearly 5 billion, will be myopic, according to a new review study published yesterday in the journal Opthalmology” Moreover, shortsightedness not only makes us put a heavy shackle on our eyes, but also increases the risk of major ocular health disorders such as retinal tearing (21 times greater), glaucoma (40 times) and cataracts (six times). According to multiple studies, the main factor for this social concern arises from the popularization of electronic devices. Based on research, unlike books printed on paper, digital screens are optically associated with so-called chromatic aberrations. The shortest wavelengths (blue light) are perceived in front of the others by the eye, which generates a myopia stimulus. There is a dose and response effect here, suggesting that prolonged use leads to more negative effects. Apart from myopia, other ocular issues are getting more pervasive as well. Strabismus and astigmatism are two other major problems among teenagers. “Doctors at Chonnam National University Hospital in Seoul have identified a link between over-use of mobile phones and convergent strabismus, a condition that sees a patient's eyes gradually moving inwards until the person is eventually cross-eyed”. Another experiment has also shown that excessive usage of mobile phones in children has been resulting in squint and double vision, conducted by doctors from Advanced Eye Entre at PGI. On the other hand, astigmatism has an approved correlation to environment light intensity. Due to the lack of incandescent and natural light in the environment, most of the light that goes into human eyes in dark environment is from digital monitors, which is considered as blue light. Scientists from University of Teledo have uncovered how blue light can lead to macular degeneration and energy contained in these light waves can gradually damage eyes. Meanwhile, multiple resources have indicated that relax eyes at proper time can largely prevent or reduce the progression of those effects mentioned earlier. Therefore, this project is to build a software to protect user from: 1. Myopia / shortsightedness 2. Strabismus / crossed eye 3. Macular degeneration / astigmatism In order to predict these information accurately, 3 eyes features need to be collected accordingly: 1. Blinking rate 2. Iris position 3. Environment darkness Blinking rate is associated with computer vision syndrome, which is the direct cause of myopia. More specifically, eye strain can reduce blinking rate, which makes patients’ tear film replenish less frequently and evaporate more quickly, causing him/her ocular discomfort. Besides, iris position would indicate the direction in which eyes are looking and it can reflect whether the user is strabismus or not. Environment light intensity have been measured as well to check whether the user is in dark environment.
