Description
Summary:This paper aims to investigate the language behind the Linear A writing script used in Minoan Crete through an investigation of the origin of the Sea Peoples. Historical and archaeological evidences have indicated that the origin of at least some of the Sea Peoples was Crete. This paper presents a 'lexicographic' approach to reveal the presence, or relation, of the Sea Peoples with Minoan Crete and the Linear A writing script. An analysis of the origin and attestations of the Sea Peoples from past researches is conducted, followed by a search of possible Sea Peoples ethnonyms and toponyms within the Linear A corpus. The research identified a likely suffix of the Minoan language in -A-SI/E but identification of possible Sea Peoples group within the Linear A corpus remains inconclusive mainly due to the paucity of Linear A materials and recurrences.
