Summary:Smart window technology has helped to reduce the heat transfer via radiation into homes and buildings. However, heat transfer via conduction is also another main factor that should be looked into and reduced. Heat sinks that can transfer heat via conduction can act as switches for smart windows. In this thesis, iron nanoparticles are synthesised and decorated onto three different carbon derivatives namely, carbon black, graphene and carbon nanotubes. It seeks to investigate the magnetic properties of the decorated carbon derivatives as well as the thermal properties, especially the thermal conductivity. It aims to determine if the samples produced have the requirements to be used as a heat sink for the modulation of conducted heat in smart windows.
