description Ceramics are increasingly used for many application in modern industries, due to their desirable functional and structural properties. However, due to the stringent requirements for such applications, conventional methods of forming and sintering are unable to meet them. The need to use shaping processes, like machining, therefore plays an integral part in producing such ceramic components. However, there are inherent problems that come with using conventional machining methods on hard and brittle materials like ceramics. This project explore the possibilities of improving the viability of machining ceramics through the control of common process parameters. Although the Material Removal Rate can be improved through cutting condition tuning, this comes at the degradation of process efficiency, incurring disproportionately higher power consumption and tool wear costs. Alternative non-conventional methods of machining ceramics are evaluated in this paper as well.
