description Many Singaporeans are falling short on the sleep they require, raising a concern on sleep deprivation in Singapore. The elusiveness of sleeping issues has made it a topic that is difficult to tackle. This project looks to find design opportunities on sleep issues and come out with a design solution that would alleviate sleep deprivation in Singapore. One main factor that is keeping Singaporeans from getting enough sleep is our lifestyle which can affect our well-being. Elements of relaxation and calmness will be explored in the project through taking inspiration from the zen garden, glamping, Nordic design and the play of light and shadow. The project aim: “To create more nap opportunities for Singaporeans and to rethink the experience of napping.” The outcome, CANOPIA, is a pendant lamp that transforms into a nap pod with a simple hinge and pulley system. The lamp when folded creates a private environment where users can feel relaxed and cosy in it. The aesthetic and experience are designed to encourage and help people to take naps more effectively. When not in used, the lamp is suspended up onto the ceiling artfully to save space.
