Summary: | This report covers the project of designing a personal mobility device, or a PMD for short, suitable for use under the strict guidelines set by the Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) due to the increase in the number of accidents and incidents in regard to PMDs. Additionally, the PMD design must also be able to meet specifications and requirements stated in the project objectives such as, rider safety. To ensure the design is capable of meeting the requirements, extensive research is conducted on existing products, different types of components and different design aspects such as the frame design. After sufficient research was done, 4 different ideas were developed and analysed. These ideas were analysed and compared according to the requirements and how well each idea met these requirements. Despite choosing the best design, it was concluded that the chosen design had to be further improved to achieve the project objective. Important factors in the frame design were considered and researched on. Some of the factors include design constraints due to LTA regulation, wheel sizing and electronic storage compartment. Values for each important parameter had to be well calculated and researched on to minimise the chances of potential problems occurring during the fabrication and construction process of the designed PMD. A special feature of this product was its ability to transform from a PMD, which was banned from use on pavements, into a Power-Assisted Bicycle (PAB) can be used on roads by changing the footrest to a standard crank set. This report also depicts detailed information required to fabricate the PMD designed in this report. Some important information includes detailed dimensions, detailed and exploded drawings and a material list. The final section of the report covers recommendations, such as tests to ensure the integrity of the design, and a conclusion on how well the designed PMD meets the project objective.
