description This project serves to design and develop a new method to determine a footwears’ internal geometry or volume of footwear for comfort, support and impact, particularly footwear for running. After studying patents and products currently available in the market, we seek to design a new concept and thereafter build a prototype for proof of concept. Considerations will be given towards the differences in foot shape of users of the same shoe size, and how footwear users perceive their shoe as comfortable by factoring in ‘comfort pressure’. The primary aim of the concept would be to enable retailers to give consumers clear concise information on internal geometry so that they may have a better understanding on shoe-to-foot fit and thereafter make a more informed decision on appropriate size of the shoe from different footwear models or brands. The method can also be used by shoe manufacturers to ensure conformity in manufacturing processes of making a shoe. Experiments introduced for proof of concept was successful in showing that such a method is possible. The prototype could be manufactured such that the instrument is able to apply a predetermined pressure and also measure displacement. As this project aims to contain the conceptual design of a functioning prototype, methods to employ for such a device will also be proposed.
