| Summary: | Cultural and ethnic values and norms do matter in analysing Indonesian politics and security studies. This paper uses Javanese culture to explain the attitudes, behaviours and perceptions of the Indonesian state and its key actors such as the military. It suggests that the Javanese culture has a distinct value system - - that it's influence has shaped Indonesia's domestic identities and structures and has informed its perceptions of worldviews. Using the Javanese concept of power, authority and leadership, this paper explains how they have shaped Indonesia's national identity, its strategic culture, and its strategic outlook.
