It was formerly known as Chinese Student Weekly (Singapore and Malayan Edition) - a local edition of Chinese Student Weekly, which is an extended project from Hong Kong that intends to expand its reach into the Southeast Asia region. While the content created for Student Weekly is localised for local interest, it managed to retain its focus in promoting the notion of the free world and democracy. The Asia Foundation also funded a series of youth programmes and activities as an extension from the Student Weekly, with an ultimate objective for students in Singapore and Malaya to break away from the Communist front. Therefore, Student Weekly and its extended projects can be regarded as the American’s cultural weapon against communist ideology in the Southeast Asia Cold War. This thesis paper will be using the records of The Asia Foundation from the Hoover Institution Library and Archives, Stanford University collection, as the main reference material. Here, the thesis paper will also discuss the relationship between The Asia Foundation and the Union Press, the Student Weekly publication process, and the degree of involvement of The Asia Foundation towards the publication and its activities.
