description This paper presents the research work on the shear lag effect for High Strength Steel (HSS) S690 angle section with single row bolted connections. Twenty-three specimens were tested in tension, including thirteen equal angles and ten unequal angles. All twenty-three of them failed by net section fracture at critical sections. The main test parameters included connection length, out-of-plane eccentricity, and connection legs for unequal angles. The necessary material tests and measurements were conducted before the actual tensile test to ensure the accuracy of manufactured specimens. The test results were compared to the nominal ultimate tensile strength using cross-section efficiency. Three design specifications (AISC 360-16, EN 1993-12, and AS4100) were assessed. Out of these three specifications, AISC 360-16 demonstrated the most consistent load ratio, but the tensile strength was overestimated for HSS sections. EN 1993-1-12 gave a conservative design tensile strength for HSS angle section connected to gusset plate by bolts but had relatively poor consistency in load ratio. AS4100 did not take the shear lag effect into consideration and hence does not give a good prediction for the shear lag effect.
