Southeast Asia is one of the world’s largest producer of hardwood species which are well-known for its superior strength and properties as compared to softwood. This paper aims to study the adhesive strength of glued laminated timber made of five hardwood species found in Southeast Asia. In the beginning of the study, preliminary tests were carried out to analyze and compare the adhesive strength of three different adhesives, specifically Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue, Elmer’s Wood Glue and Jowat adhesives. Based on the gathered information from the tests, Jowat adhesives has the highest adhesive strength due to its load-bearing properties followed by Elmer’s Wood Glue and Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue with non-structural adhesive qualities. In this research paper, tests are carried out to determine the adhesives strength of Jowat adhesive when used on five tropical hardwood species such as Balau, Kapur, Kempas, Keruing and Merbau. Three tests are carried out, namely Longitudinal Tensile test, Shear test and Transverse Tensile test in accordance with the European Standards mentioned in the report. Three test specimens were provided for each wood species for each test. Based on the outcome of the Longitudinal Tensile test and Tensile Test Perpendicular-to-grain where the adhesives of the timber species were subjected to a tensile force, their performance ranking is Keruing, Kapur, Kempas, Merbau and Balau. As for the Shear test, the adhesive strength of Merbau is the highest, followed by Kempas, Keruing, Balau and then Kapur. This research reflects the varying performance of Jowat adhesives when subjected to a compressive and tensile load. This study was conducted to provide an in-depth analysis of the adhesives strength of glued laminated timber and its behaviour when subjected to compressive and tensile loads.
