description This project explores the feasibility of producing a prototype web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) for Singapore by analyzing information such as the cost of rental and sales of accommodation in Jurong West and Boon Lay areas. This project aims to provide staff and students of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) an online platform, allowing them to find accommodation at a preferred price and location with greater ease. The background of GIS is provided in greater detail in the main report. The report also illustrates the applications of GIS and the industries that are using this system. A detailed literature review has been done. Research shows that GIS has been used in many government sectors and organizations in different countries to improve their revenue and increase work efficiency. The selection of the appropriate software for the application of GIS for the project is also covered. Autocad 3D Map is the application chosen for this project even though there are other software and hardcopy alternatives available in the market today. The procedures and the methods to complete the tasks required for the project are highlighted. As a large amount of data is required for the project, the means to collect these data is illustrated. Several problems and difficulties were encountered during the project and solutions to resolve them are explained in this report. Due to the limitations and the scarcity of the time and resources, there are several aspects of work that can be done to improve the system in the near future. Recommendations and plans to follow up on GIS are also emphasized in this report. With the data collected in this project, it is hoped that the search for information will be made easier for the user and reduce the time spent on analyzing the information collected.
