description This research project aims to find out if newspapers in different languages, English and Chinese, are portraying the society in the same way. Through a content analysis of the coverage of home news by the Straits Times, Sin Chew Jit Poh and Lianhe Zaobao, it attempts to find out if the different language newspapers are telling their readers similar or different stories about Singapore. The results revealed that the two language papers were more editorially independent prior to the formation of Singapore Press Holdings and hence their portrayal of the society was relatively different. After the formation of Singapore Press Holdings, there was evidence to suggest that the two language papers were editorially similar and therefore displayed a convergence with regards to the portrayal of society. Overall the findings support the notion that the formation of a newspaper monopoly had narrowed the gap between the editorial policies of the two language newspapers.
